When Aralyn Liddell looks in the mirror, she sees a plain girl with drab brunette hair, pale skin tainted with freckles, and lips so thin she considers herself lip-less! Standing next to her gorgeous sister with porcelain skin, deep-brown eyes, raven-black hair, and rosy, plump lips does not help matters either. With such a beautiful sister she is easily overlooked and soon realizes that she is nothing more than a Plain Jane. Prevailing through adolescence, she creates an arsenal of pretty dresses to camouflage her plainness, but the loom of the Fates seems to be spinning a dark future for the young poet. When the threads of her life begin to unravel, will the Fates seal her doom?

Plain Jane is an excellent first novel for Ms. Benefield! I think that this is the sort of book that parents and teenagers alike can read, learn from, and enjoy. As a 27-year-old woman, the story took me back to my own junior high and high school experiences. While I did not go through the exact same struggles as the protagonist of the story, I found many parts of the story with which I could empathize, and I remember thinking many times, "wow, I can totally relate to what is happening with this girl!" It manages to be instructional without being too heavy-handed, and is the sort of book that I would recommend to any teenage girl (or boy) struggling with self-esteem, depression, or substance abuse. While not for a very young reader, Ms. Benefield deals very tactfully with difficult situations, and the story has a wonderfully redeeming ending! I am sincerely looking forward to the next novel from this author; I would read anything that she published!Product details

Plain Jane edition by Schledia Phillips Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Plain Jane is a wonderful book. It really captures the teen dynamic and angst. Mrs. Benefield writes with an understanding of what teens' experience. This book is a must read!
The author's first (and my favorite of hers so far) novel is engaging and emotionally charged. Wonderfully tells the story through Aralyn's eyes. Her book "Pretty Boy" tells the story through Ray's eyes, which adds even more dimension. You can't read one without the other )
This book took me on an incredible heartfelt journey. Written from the perspective of a young girl and following her throughout her young adult life, there were many real life situations that reminded me of my own anquish of low esteem as I was growing up. In fact as I read the first chapters, I was brought to tears many times. All to often, young girls carry bad memories of careless things that were said or done to them. These memories become part of their identity and influence their decisions that they make as adults. Schledia Benefield does an excellent job of portraying that familiar journey through the main character, Aralyn. And the transformation that takes place within Aralyn, is one that left me as the reader with a triumphant feeling. I think this book would be an excellent read for any young girl who struggles with their identify and just the hard parts about growing up. I will be recommending it to my friends.
How do you review a book this good, without giving away too much? Once I picked it up, I didn't want to put it down. I found myself on a long car trip, "as a passenger" wanting to continue my reading. As it was getting dark, I was scrambling looking for anything that would provide light. I had only the last 10 pages of the book to read and I didn't know what lay ahead. When we arrived, there would be no time to finish the book. Finally, I thought, "all I need is a flashlight. Hmmm, I bet there's an "app" for that. I was right. Voila! And, with a flashlight at my fingertips, I was back in business
From the moment I saw the cover, "clue", I knew I would be drawn into Jane's story. Simple, thought provoking all tied up in a neat little bow.
The mind of a small child is very complex. There is nothing "simple" about it. Jane's story took me down the memory lane of my own life and stories that my own child told me but I never, really understood. Children seem to compartmentalize everything. Almost as if they are putting away pieces of their lives for safe keeping. Everyone has a story (even children) and "Jane's", is one definitely worth not only reading but comprehending. A "book club" must read.
I really enjoyed it because I went to all three of the schools she went to. I could picture all of the places she was referring to.
This is an amazing book written with a true understanding of what some young girls go through growing up and how it effects them in their lives. I would suggest it to all young teen woman and even their parents!! Once you start reading it. -- you can't put it Down!!
I read this book because I know the author, so perhaps my review might not be the most objective. I think it is an excellent first novel and I believe Schledia is on her way. I am a 59 year old man, certainly not the target audience, which I perceive to be young women, but I enjoyed it anyway. I hope it could make a difference to someone who is facing difficult times and choices in life.
